Success Story

Picture
Roc Paper Straws, LLC is a woman-owned manufacturing plant producing paper drinking straws. Its mission is to replace plastic straws with biodegradable paper drinking straws. Dissatisfied with the available products, Karrie Laughton and her daughter decided to manufacture their own brand of straws. Roc Paper Straws, LLC needed SBDC assistance to provide business plan revisions, financial forecasting, liaison assistance with financial institutions, and general business start-up advice.

“[Advisor] Gina Mangiamele was able to guide us through some pretty big hurdles along
with compiling mountains of information we needed to finally get the funding we were applying
for. Roc Paper Straws is now officially up and running with the help of the SBDC."

Difficulties arose with lenders rejecting their funding requests, requiring new approaches to find financing. SBDC Business Advisor Gina Mangiamele remained steadfast in assisting the Laughtons to achieve their goals. She provided business plan assessment and revisions, financial forecasts, loan packaging, and liaison support. Rochester Economic Development Corporation (REDCO) funded the project for $200,000, and the Laughtons received a grant for $50,000. They were able to close on the REDCO loan and now have the funding necessary to start manufacturing. Ms. Laughton hosted an open house and ribbon cutting in September 2022 that was well attended by citizens, relatives, politicians and the SBDC.
